Summer Peaches and Sweet Memories

Last weekend, my husband and I took a trip to Upstate New York to visit my dear friend Carol’s family.  Carol passed away suddenly in 2011, much too soon.  I wasn’t ready for it.  None of us were ready for it–but that’s the way life is–throwing us all unpredictable twists and turns which challenge us, mystify us and make us stronger in the end.  These experiences help us realize what we have in life and the special people we meet along our way.  Carol’s family are just those kind of wonderful people!

Now, you’re probably saying, “What in the world does this have to do with summer peaches and sweet memories.”  Well, in the summertime, in the small towns and villages around Rochester, New York, near Lake Ontario, farmers grow the most amazing peaches in their vast orchards.  They are very tasty and sweet! What a treat!  Carol’s family graciously gave us a carton full of delicious peaches that we have been enjoying since we arrived back home in Maryland.

Peaches remind me of special times during the summers growing up in suburban Washington, DC.  My parents would load my sister and I in the family car for our early August run to the Catoctin Mountain Orchard, north of Frederick, Maryland, where we would stock up on the sweetest summer peaches.  We looked forward to the annual trek and the treat all year.

Many times in this hectic world of ours today, I look back so fondly to my childhood years where the thought of driving 45 miles for summer peaches was as special as going to the movies or the beach.

Whether it was eating one of those succulent peaches outside on our front steps, or going to the local ice cream store for a cone on Sunday evenings, those kinds of summer pleasures will always bring a smile to my heart and remind me of the simple pleasures in life that we treasure all of our days.  Childhood memories buried deep within and sparked by experiences today are to be savored just as I savor the joy of eating a delectable New York State peach!

It is these precious, simple childhood memories that truly inspire me as a writer to create stories about multi-generational relationships, contrasting the contemporary and modern with vintage aspects and settings of the past.  The simple pleasures in life–a gesture of kindness, a smile, a true friend, the treasures of the earth–are to be appreciated and savored to carry us through a lifetime of change.

Happy Summer Eating, Reading, and Writing!

England – A Journey Through Time!

Pink Lemonade Diary (Pink Lemonade Memories) by Juliette Hill

Also available in the UK and on NOOK!

Just as the opening ceremonies of the 30th Olympiad in London began on July 27th by taking the audience on a journey through history, I would like you to join me on a little journey of my own.  I’ll take you back to the year 1954, one year after the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

My father, at this time a confirmed bachelor, took the transatlantic ‘voyage of a lifetime’ aboard the French Line’s SS Liberte, one of the premier ocean liners of its time with an interesting history.  He sailed from New York Harbor to Plymouth, England.

His six-week European tour included ample time to enjoy the historic sights and shops of  London, and the English countryside.  He dined in fine restaurants, attended classical plays, and explored quaint shops in English villages and cities.

It wasn’t until after our mother’s death in 2007 that my sister and I discovered all the momentos and memorabilia my dad had saved from his incredible trip!   The items we found included a Fodor’s Modern Guides:  Britain 1954, Illustrated Edition.  I marvel everyday knowing that this book is something he read on his transatlantic voyage.  I treasure having it in my possession!

This is yet another example of how books endure over time!  I think of his amazing trip every time I page through it.  I look forward to the day when I can take my own transatlantic voyage of a lifetime — revisiting the iconic places he visited almost 60 years ago — starting with a tour of England, exploring areas that inspired some of the greatest literary figures of all time:  Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare to name but a few!

I hope that you experience your own incredible literary journey whether on a transatlantic voyage or a literary voyage through the works of your favorite writers!  May the journey be as pleasurable as the destination!

 Bon Voyage!

A Moment in “Michener’s Library”

Pink Lemonade Diary (Pink Lemonade Memories) by Juliette Hill

Also available on NOOK!

Several weekends ago, my husband and I decided to take a break from everyday life and head to the Eastern Shore of Maryland for an overnight excursion.  We are lucky to be so close to the area, within about 100 miles.  Our destination was a beautiful resort nestled on the banks of the Choptank River in the small town of Cambridge.

Once we arrived, we began to relax.  It was quiet and peaceful there, and believe it or not, our destination has a connection to the world of writing.  I just can’t get away from it, even when I try.

The first place we explored in the hotel was a lovely lounge called, what else but, “Michener’s Library,” after the renowned author James Michener.  One of his well-known works, Chesapeake, is an epic saga which takes place along the banks of the Choptank.  Being there reminded me how lucky I am to live so close to an area that inspired such a great writer.  So much so, that I want to go back and revisit his famous work.

I invite you to explore some unique places that may be around your neck of the woods, and share the stories of rediscovering the passions and surroundings that inspire you or other authors to greatness!

As always,

Juliette

Murder With My Darling (Bonnie Lou Mysteries) by Annie Acorn

Also available on NOOK!

Hello, Everyone!  Thank you for visiting!  This week, I have a very special treat for you—my interview with the one and only Bonnie Lou of Missing County, Tennessee, star of Annie Acorn’s Murder with My Darling (Bonnie Lou Mysteries)!

Juliette:  Welcome, Bonnie Lou!  I do appreciate you taking time away from your busy schedule at your beauty parlor and helping out that Chunk of Hunk lawman sweetie of yours to speak with us today.  Speaking of your shop, Nice ‘n’ Pretty, how’s business going?

Bonnie LouBonnie Lou:  Well, Juliette…  You don’t mind if I call you Juliette since it’s just the two of us, do you?  Well, Juliette, business at Nice ‘n’ Pretty is just booming, thanks for asking.  Sue Ellen, our head manicurist, was afraid that Mrs. Hedgewood and her big yellow toenails were going to move in after the story broke about Johnny Brown’s murder, and of course, we’ve had some curiosity seekers.

Juliette:  Bonnie Lou, dear, tell us, after  assuming ownership of the beauty shop eight years ago from your mother on your 21st birthday, how has that impacted your life as a beauty queen contestant?

Bonnie Lou:  I do feel sometimes like I’m burning my candle at three ends, and by the end of a full day my cheeks can be really sore from all of the smiling.

Having said that, though, I do think that as the reigning beauty queen of Missing County, I sort of owe it to my public to share my wealth of knowledge.  I mean, some of those gals need all the help they can get if you know what I mean.

Speaking of which, Juliette… [Bonnie Lou fingers author’s hair]  You might want to consider stopping by for a touch-up.

Juliette:  Moving right along, Bonnie Lou…We realize how close you are to Missing County’s Sheriff, Dave Crockett.  How supportive has he been over the years of your career?   Rumor has it you helped him with a recent murder case.  Does he feel that your talents are better utilized in assisting him in solving crime than in running your business?

Bonnie Lou:  Oh, you don’t have to worry about Dave, Juliette.  I certainly don’t.  His mother and I have had plenty of time to raise him right, and he knows better than to get in either or our ways.

Besides, a happy gal is a happy pal, as I’ve told him a number of times.  Although, I always make it a point to be ready for our dates.  After all, Rule # 15 in A Southern Gal’s Guide to Keeping Your Man is – Never keep your guy waiting.

Juliette:  Very good advice, indeed.  Turning back to the subject of your shop, how did you go about selecting Miss Dolly Ferguson as your assistant at Nice ‘n’ Pretty?

Bonnie Lou:  Now I’m glad you asked me that one, Juliette, because some folks have said I picked her for her mousy appearance, not wanting to hire anyone who might have been perceived as competition.

In point of fact, I chose her in large part because I hoped some of Nice ‘n’ Pretty might rub off on her.  I mean, the child does have nice legs and good bones, and some highlights would go a long way, don’t you think?

Juliette:  From what I know of Miss Ferguson, her inner beauty shines brightly.  Maybe she has more on her mind than highlighting her hair or catching a man.  But getting back to the matter at hand…

You mentioned that you were crowned Miss Candy Cane of 2002, Queen of the Mountain Ramps, and Princess of the Lambs, just to name a few of your achievements.  Which one of these titles did you “enjoy” having the most?

Bonnie Lou:  Enjoy being the key word in your question, I would have to say being Grand Lady of the Possum Creek Bears.  Those guys are a hoot, and they’ve chosen me as their Grand Lady fourteen years in a row now.  Having said that, though, being Queen of the Mountain Bucks has been a lot of fun, too, although that title is fairly new.  And then, of course, there’s my Queen of the Udder Dairy’s Farm Picnic title.  I mean, who doesn’t like a picnic?

Juliette:  Bonnie Lou, dear, if you don’t mind me asking–we would all like to know–why haven’t you entered the Miss America pageant?

Bonnie Lou:  No comment!

Juliette:  Well, we all hope that someday you will share that story with us.  And, finally, Bonnie Lou, I understand that you must be getting back to that Chunk of Hunk of yours, Davey.   Can you give us some tips from A Southern Gal’s Guide to Keeping Your Man?

Bonnie Lou:  Isn’t that book just the greatest?  There are so many great tips included within its much-fingered pages, and each one has its time and place.

Rule # 7 – Be prepared at all times to be beautiful in under fifteen minutes in case an emergency arises – is important of course.  And Rule # 17 – Always offer to help, especially when there’s no chance of the offer being accepted, is one that everyone should try and remember.

Juliette:  Well, Bonnie Lou we’ve run out of time, but this conversation has been most enlightening!  Thank you for joining us today here at One Vintage Heart.  Please keep us posted on any new developments with your man or murder in Missing County!  Good luck to you!

As always,

Juliette

My Father, A Chess Match and Writing

Pink Lemonade Diary (Pink Lemonade Memories) by Juliette Hill

Also available on NOOK!

Last weekend, I was remembering my father and missing him very much on Father’s Day. As many of my readers know, I often speak of my parents in my blogs, and of the wonderful things that they told me and taught me through the years.

One of the best things that my Dad taught me, besides the love of books, was how to play chess!  He enjoyed playing and was happy to teach me the game when I showed an interest.  I learned quickly and loved the challenge, but have to say he won most of our matches!  He was a very good player.

My experience as a writer and published author reminds me of a chess match! Knowing the rules of the game is essential.  Good writing and great editing along with a fantastic cover are the winning combination.  Strategy plays an important role in planning the best possible moves to promote and market your work.  Protecting your intellectual property is similar to protecting your King, along with advancing other key pieces to insure your goal is in reach.  In chess, the goal is placing your opponent in check-mate, and in the world of writing, it equates to having your work published and hopefully assuming a prominent place in the literary world.

Make your name/brand a powerful force.  Plan and execute a winning combination or set of moves by surrounding yourself and your work (your King and Queen) with good people, good resources, good advice, and good social media prescence.  Examine your possible paths to success.  Don’t take anything for granted.  Vigilence will pay off in the form of increased readership and ultimately sales and profitability.

Don’t get me wrong, I feel that writers write because they have meaningful stories to share.  Writing is real and serious business.  From my perspective, the skills required to play a good game of chess can also be applied to the world of authorship and publishing.

As always,

Juliette

Good Writing, Good Reading: Jane Austen, Then and Now

Pink Lemonade Diary (Pink Lemonade Memories) by Juliette Hill

Also available for NOOK!

Recently, I discovered a hidden treasure inside one of the volumes of a boxed set of Jane Austen’s works, that I inherited from my father.  It was an old newspaper clipping that my father had saved.  He always collected articles or clipping that he came across regarding any of the books in his library or a particular book he was reading.

The article was an installment of a regular column in one of our local newspapers at the time, The Evening Star, from probably, the 1950s.  The column, “This and That. . .” written by Charles E. Tracewell, was a regular feature in the newspaper.  In this particular installment, the month is December, and Mr. Tracewell comments on the writings of Jane Austen.

He noted that not everyone liked Austen’s books when they were published, but others did.  Maybe, he said, because “…her plain stories [are] about ordinary people whose adventures are not much…” but “…the fragrance of these old stories will enter your blood through the mental circulation.”

Further, he wrote, “It is impossible to read these novels without smelling things, the growing shrubs of the English countryside, and seeing the birds, too, though as far as we can recall, she never spoke of birds.  The birds are there, because they had to be there, in the scene in which her characters walked, and they always walked, when they weren’t riding in the carriage.”

Today, as I read the works of others and write my own, I enjoy being drawn into the environment, and also creating environments by utilizing the senses in a way that will evoke the truest human reactions and emotions.  Good writing will invariably triumph at this challenge.  The timelessness of Jane Austen’s writings is evidenced by their immense popularity today.

As Mr. Tracewell concluded, “…when we speak of good books we must speak of Jane Austen’s because they are good.”

Until next time,

Juliette

Vacation Inspiration 2: Palm Beach

Pink Lemonade Diary (Pink Lemonade Memories) by Juliette Hill

Also available on NOOK!

As you know from my last post, I have been on a wonderful vacation in Florida for the past week.  For the final few days of the trip, we traveled south from Daytona Beach to Palm Beach!  Palm Beach blends tropical bliss with decades of history.  For generations it has been the seasonal as well as permanent home to some of the rich, famous, and influential figures of our time.

Driving into Palm Beach, we began our weekend respite by having lunch at a lovely restaurant, recommended by a friend, that is celebrating its 91st year! That is so amazing and speaks to the essence of “One Vintage Heart.”  As my husband and I dined on the outdoor patio facing one of the main avenues leading from the highway to the ocean, I felt the ambiance of years gone by and wondered who might have dined at the same table during those 91 years!

Next, we moved on to our hotel, equally steeped in historic charm, located right in the heart of town, two blocks from the famed Worth Avenue and down the street from the Atlantic Ocean.  The hotel was built in 1921 as a condominium and was later turned into a hotel. Our bellman told us stories about the property during the “Roaring 20s.”  My mind immediately visualized the parties that may have taken place on the property and the interesting conversations the guests must have had.

Exploring Worth Avenue and the legendary shops, I was impressed with the beautiful architecture of the buildings and massive lantern lights that line the breezeways.  The shops reflect timeless style and elegance as well as the latest in fashion.

One shop in particular struck a cord with me.  It was a shop that carries the finest in stationery and associated products.  I bought a beautiful family tree chart designed on exquisite Italian paper.  Now reinvigorated by my purchase to continue and complete my family history research project this summer, I am once again reminded of the joy I feel when I explore the past through the lives of my ancestors.

I hope that your travels will also inspire you to journal about your trip, read a great book while traveling or create your own incredible literary work!

Safe journeys to you all!

Vacation Inspiration

Pink Lemonade Diary (Pink Lemonade Memories) by Juliette Hill

Also available on NOOK!

This weekend, my husband and I began our week-long vacation.  We always love going to Florida.  It’s one of our special places, that is practically any resort town on the Atlantic coast.  Vacations always inspire my imagination and the writer within me!  This year is no different.

As we began our trek along I-95 south, the creative juices started flowing.  I’m not sure what it is about getting out of everyday surroundings and into the vastness of what lies beyond the familiarity of home that sets me free.

Entering North Carolina, the idea just hit me.  What idea you ask?  The vision for my new amateur sleuth mystery series, about a detective’s widow and interior designer/vintage treasure seeker keeping herself busy by volunteering with the local cold case unit.  Between design assignments and vintage “hunts” she embarks on the trail of unsolved murder clues to find closure to the case and hopefully justice.

I’m very excited to embark upon this new mystery series, adding it to the growing list of works in progress.  Look for the first in the series to come out Winter 2012/Spring 2013.  Meanwhile, the second of my “Pink Lemonade Memories” series is in the works, along with  a Christmas novella full of heart-wrenching emotional struggles that test the true meaning of  Christmas and the Christmas spirit.

Additionally, look for my newest Christmas short story in the upcoming Annie Acorn Christmas Anthology.  You won’t want to miss this year’s collection of holiday stories!

I wish all of you a safe, enjoyable and fantastic vacation whenever that takes place.  Happy Memorial Day and thanks to all our brave and wonderful service men  and women all over the world!

Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue

Pink Lemonade Diary (Pink Lemonade Memories) by Juliette Hill

Also available on NOOK!

No, I’m not getting married!  I’m happily married to the best guy in the world!  But, during the past month, I seem to have had something in common with brides.

The title of this week’s blog, the age-old saying associated with brides on their wedding day–“something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue” oddly enough sums up experiences that have affected me throughout the month of May.  Each part of the saying, interestingly enough, has a significance to my life as a writer.  Let me explain!

Something old – During the first weekend of May, my husband and I decided to spruce up our back patio.  Besides the cleaning and gardening aspects of that task, we also thought we would pick up a few unique finds at my favorite “vintage hip” store.  I love treasure hunting for vintage pieces which is, of course, a passion of mine.  At the store, I discovered a painted planter box (for some of my new flowers), a vintage tray (to carry those fancy summer drinks from kitchen to patio), and what I thought was an old railroad lantern! (to hang on the fence and look rustic)!

After some internet research, I found that my lantern wasn’t a railroad lantern at all, but an old (late 19th/early 20th century) bike, motorcycle, or carriage light! I was thrilled.  As a writer, I started imagining the life history of the object and the stories it could tell.  Stories began emerging in my mind.  Ah…the creative juices of a writer!

Something new – Early in May, I was invited to a “purse party.”  I know, you’re thinking how could this possibly relate as a writer.  Looking through the products catalog, I saw a very practical but beautiful laptop carrier.  Just what I was looking for since I’ve been lugging my laptop to my editor’s/publisher’s.  And, it has arrived just in time for me to take it on vacation.  Perfect!  Problem solved!

Something borrowed – The last time I was working with my publisher, she recommended I read and let me borrow her copy of “The Maeve Binchy Writers’ Club.”  What an excellent book for beginning writers or really any writer to have in their library!  Containing great tips, the book guides the new writer through the steps of the process.  It will be a permanent addition to my library!

Something blue – My last week of May will be spent by the “deep blue sea.”  A vacation by the ocean is exactly what this writer needs to refresh and refuel, after a long four months of finishing my first YA novella, published April 29th.  The blue of the ocean will clear my head and allow some additional stories to emerge that I’ll be working on for the rest of the year.

Hope your May has been a great month so far!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Pink Lemonade Diary (Pink Lemonade Memories) by Juliette Hill

Also available on NOOK!

Today, I find myself missing my mother, reminiscing about the special times we enjoyed, the stories she told, and the important values she instilled in me.  Particularly, she taught me to love and appreciate books, and that reading is key to understanding the world around us.

Mom grew up in northwest Georgia, at the foothills of the mountains, the eldest of eleven children.  Often, after a long day of school and chores, she would sneak a flashlight into her room to continue reading a favorite book at bedtime.  Any spare time she had, she chose to read.

After graduation from a two-year college, my mother began teaching a fifth grade class at an elementary school in a neighboring county.  Through her passion for teaching others, especially children, she hoped to instill in each of her students that same love of reading and books.  In furtherance of this goal, she gave each of her students a book of their own before they left her classroom.

One of those students, over fifty years later, got back in touch with her to thank her for that single gift of a book, so long ago, which had changed his life forever.  The love of books and reading that he gained from his days in her classroom had remained strong to that very day!

That same love of reading and books continues to be a driving force in my life as well, inspiring me everyday as a writer!

Happy Mother’s Day,

Juliette
