Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue

No, I’m not getting married!  I’m happily married to the best guy in the world!  But, during the past month, I seem to have had something in common with brides.

The title of this week’s blog, the age-old saying associated with brides on their wedding day–“something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue” oddly enough sums up experiences that have affected me throughout the month of May.  Each part of the saying, interestingly enough, has a significance to my life as a writer.  Let me explain!

Something old – During the first weekend of May, my husband and I decided to spruce up our back patio.  Besides the cleaning and gardening aspects of that task, we also thought we would pick up a few unique finds at my favorite “vintage hip” store.  I love treasure hunting for vintage pieces which is, of course, a passion of mine.  At the store, I discovered a painted planter box (for some of my new flowers), a vintage tray (to carry those fancy summer drinks from kitchen to patio), and what I thought was an old railroad lantern! (to hang on the fence and look rustic)!

After some internet research, I found that my lantern wasn’t a railroad lantern at all, but an old (late 19th/early 20th century) bike, motorcycle, or carriage light! I was thrilled.  As a writer, I started imagining the life history of the object and the stories it could tell.  Stories began emerging in my mind.  Ah…the creative juices of a writer!

Something new – Early in May, I was invited to a “purse party.”  I know, you’re thinking how could this possibly relate as a writer.  Looking through the products catalog, I saw a very practical but beautiful laptop carrier.  Just what I was looking for since I’ve been lugging my laptop to my editor’s/publisher’s.  And, it has arrived just in time for me to take it on vacation.  Perfect!  Problem solved!

Something borrowed – The last time I was working with my publisher, she recommended I read and let me borrow her copy of “The Maeve Binchy Writers’ Club.”  What an excellent book for beginning writers or really any writer to have in their library!  Containing great tips, the book guides the new writer through the steps of the process.  It will be a permanent addition to my library!

Something blue – My last week of May will be spent by the “deep blue sea.”  A vacation by the ocean is exactly what this writer needs to refresh and refuel, after a long four months of finishing my first YA novella, published April 29th.  The blue of the ocean will clear my head and allow some additional stories to emerge that I’ll be working on for the rest of the year.

Hope your May has been a great month so far!
