Happy Mother’s Day!

Today, I find myself missing my mother, reminiscing about the special times we enjoyed, the stories she told, and the important values she instilled in me.  Particularly, she taught me to love and appreciate books, and that reading is key to understanding the world around us.

Mom grew up in northwest Georgia, at the foothills of the mountains, the eldest of eleven children.  Often, after a long day of school and chores, she would sneak a flashlight into her room to continue reading a favorite book at bedtime.  Any spare time she had, she chose to read.

After graduation from a two-year college, my mother began teaching a fifth grade class at an elementary school in a neighboring county.  Through her passion for teaching others, especially children, she hoped to instill in each of her students that same love of reading and books.  In furtherance of this goal, she gave each of her students a book of their own before they left her classroom.

One of those students, over fifty years later, got back in touch with her to thank her for that single gift of a book, so long ago, which had changed his life forever.  The love of books and reading that he gained from his days in her classroom had remained strong to that very day!

That same love of reading and books continues to be a driving force in my life as well, inspiring me everyday as a writer!

Happy Mother’s Day,

I miss my mom as well, and this being the first year away from my family (first year in college) and my first mothers day without my mom, it was a hard toll when I realized just how much we take our parents for granted. You don’t realize but time wanes them and soon it’s time for us to take care of them and show them our forever gratitude for bringing us into this world.
