My Father, A Chess Match and Writing

Last weekend, I was remembering my father and missing him very much on Father’s Day. As many of my readers know, I often speak of my parents in my blogs, and of the wonderful things that they told me and taught me through the years.

One of the best things that my Dad taught me, besides the love of books, was how to play chess!  He enjoyed playing and was happy to teach me the game when I showed an interest.  I learned quickly and loved the challenge, but have to say he won most of our matches!  He was a very good player.

My experience as a writer and published author reminds me of a chess match! Knowing the rules of the game is essential.  Good writing and great editing along with a fantastic cover are the winning combination.  Strategy plays an important role in planning the best possible moves to promote and market your work.  Protecting your intellectual property is similar to protecting your King, along with advancing other key pieces to insure your goal is in reach.  In chess, the goal is placing your opponent in check-mate, and in the world of writing, it equates to having your work published and hopefully assuming a prominent place in the literary world.

Make your name/brand a powerful force.  Plan and execute a winning combination or set of moves by surrounding yourself and your work (your King and Queen) with good people, good resources, good advice, and good social media prescence.  Examine your possible paths to success.  Don’t take anything for granted.  Vigilence will pay off in the form of increased readership and ultimately sales and profitability.

Don’t get me wrong, I feel that writers write because they have meaningful stories to share.  Writing is real and serious business.  From my perspective, the skills required to play a good game of chess can also be applied to the world of authorship and publishing.

As always,

Juliette
