Just as the opening ceremonies of the 30th Olympiad in London began on July 27th by taking the audience on a journey through history, I would like you to join me on a little journey of my own.  I’ll take you back to the year 1954, one year after the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.

My father, at this time a confirmed bachelor, took the transatlantic ‘voyage of a lifetime’ aboard the French Line’s SS Liberte, one of the premier ocean liners of its time with an interesting history.  He sailed from New York Harbor to Plymouth, England.

His six-week European tour included ample time to enjoy the historic sights and shops of  London, and the English countryside.  He dined in fine restaurants, attended classical plays, and explored quaint shops in English villages and cities.

It wasn’t until after our mother’s death in 2007 that my sister and I discovered all the momentos and memorabilia my dad had saved from his incredible trip!   The items we found included a Fodor’s Modern Guides:  Britain 1954, Illustrated Edition.  I marvel everyday knowing that this book is something he read on his transatlantic voyage.  I treasure having it in my possession!

This is yet another example of how books endure over time!  I think of his amazing trip every time I page through it.  I look forward to the day when I can take my own transatlantic voyage of a lifetime — revisiting the iconic places he visited almost 60 years ago — starting with a tour of England, exploring areas that inspired some of the greatest literary figures of all time:  Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, William Shakespeare to name but a few!

I hope that you experience your own incredible literary journey whether on a transatlantic voyage or a literary voyage through the works of your favorite writers!  May the journey be as pleasurable as the destination!

 Bon Voyage!

Juliette
